The Trial is Delayed – Again

We are heartbroken to share that the trial for the murder of Zackary Marshall, which was scheduled to begin on June 23, 2025, has once again been delayed.

Zackary was murdered in Providence in 2010. In March of 2021, a suspect was indicted. In August of 2023, Jason Lopes was released on bail after a bail hearing with witnesses on $150,000 bail. At this time the state and the defense were ready to go to trial and the Judge urged that the case move forward quickly. What followed has been a pattern of postponements and silence. The trial was originally scheduled for December 2024, a year and four months after the bail hearing then pushed to June 2025, another nearly 7 months. Now, that date is off the table and it sounds like we’ll be lucky if it’s even tried this year.

We continue to speak up because silence only benefits those who hope this case disappears into bureaucracy. We will not stop asking. We will not stop watching. We will not stop speaking.

Justice for Zackary Marshall

As I sit and read this I can only think of one word to describe the affect this has had on us and that is HEARTBREAK. The lack of communication and resources available for the victims family is sad and unacceptable. I owe it to Zack as his mother to see this through to the end and get the justice he deserves and the peace and healing we need. The impact this has had on us personally and emotionally is very difficult. The system is definately broken and there needs to be change. When your told repeatedly that it’s a scheduling issue and that yet another delay but yet yours sons life is not important enough to get a scheduling issue fixed. The defendant seems to have all the rights and because he is not in jail he gets to remain out for probably another 6 months if not more. I will never get back those times with my son. Another birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day etc. I need someone to help me to find away to navigate this legal system.
